Structure to Function

In this unit, students will explore how structure and function, the external structures of plants and animals, and biomimicry. Students will make observations of structures, create designs and models, and conduct hands-on STEM investigations of how structure affects function. This unit will help students develop critical thinking skills, draw inspiration from the world around them when creating design solutions, and understand how external structures and their function affect the survival of organisms.  

Hands-on Activities: 

  • Leaf examination and reading 
  • Biomimicry design drawings and model creation 
  • Growing plants to observe differing root structures 
  • Bird beak investigation stations  
  • Nest building clips, discussion, and construction
